Textile Art by Valve Alamaa
Valve
Alamaa is a beloved and reputable craftswoman who celebrated her 85th
birthday this year. Valve Alamaa’s works that are preserved in
museums were exhibited in Viljandi Museum, and embroidered and
striped woven blankets, shawls, wraps and pillows from the artist’s
private collection are displayed in the Kondas Centre.
Alamaa is considered one of the best weavers in Viljandi County. A great breakthrough in her creative life was meeting and cooperating with textile designer Veevi Pajupuu. Valve Alamaa has made a number of beautiful, embroidered blankets according to Pajupuu’s designs. In recent years, Alamaa has collaborated with textile artist Christi Kütt. Since 1972, she has participated in exhibitions, she led the handicraft club of Viljandi Museum in 1972–1992, and at Uue-Kariste in 1977–2011. Valve Alamaa was one of the founders and an active member of Viljandi folk art society. She was awarded with the title of the master craftsman of Viljandi County in 1998 and the title “Eesti Pärandihoidja” (Estonian Heritage Carrier) in 2002. Items crafted by Valve Alamaa have often been purchased or given as a gift and thereby reached different places in Estonia, and also Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Japan, Greece, England, Sweden, Switzerland, etc.
