Rembrandt
comes to Viljandi
These 18 etchings are from the personal collection of R. Paul Firnhaber of Viljandi. He has been studying, collecting and enjoying Rembrandt for over 60 years. The exhibited prints were printed from copper plates c 1870-80. By this time many of Rembrandt`s original plates had been "reworked" because the soft copper cut lines could no longer produce the thin, accurate, crisp lines. Some of the engravers who worked on such plates are known, some are not. Comparisons with original lifetime prints tell us they are very, very accurate.
